When the Mind Creates Chaos, the Body Needs Calm
It’s always such a pleasure and honor to share space and Reiki with the beautiful, open-hearted community of a Sacred Shift. This Sunday was no exception! I’m so grateful for the trust, perspective, and humor that each participant brings to our group.
This week we explored the internal narratives that we get stuck in, and hurtful ways that we speak to ourselves. Blaming ourselves for mistakes and missed opportunities that were never ours. Labeling ourselves and limiting our own care and growth. And getting caught in self-inflicted loops of shame and inner conflict when we find ourselves in an uncomfortable situation. Not. Helpful.
When this happens, regulating your nervous system is the doorway back to clarity, honesty, and self-acceptance. This is the ground from which progress and joy can grow. A daily meditation practice is an excellent tool to build this foundation, but it is not the only way. And it’s not always accessible when your internal dialogue turns against you.
When your mind starts creating chaos where your body needs calm, try one simple way to come back to yourself.
- A short walk. Let your body move before asking your mind to solve everything.
- Thirty seconds of movement. Try jumping jacks, shaking out your arms, stretching, or any quick movement that helps get out energy.
- Cold touch. Place ice or cool water on your wrists, chest, or face to help bring your nervous system back toward calm.
- Bare feet on the ground. Connect your feet to the grass, earth, or floor and notice the support beneath you.
- Three slow breaths. Pause. Inhale slowly. Exhale fully. Let yourself arrive back in the present moment.
Above all else, be kind to yourself. If the words you say to yourself are not what you would say to a friend, or even a stranger, gently shift that script. Not fighting or false positivity, just a gentle rewrite. Yours is the voice that you will hear the most in this lifetime. Teach it to be your advocate, not your enemy.
